Building Permits

Building Permit application forms can be obtained from the Building Department, 196 Central Avenue, Lawrence, N.Y. 11559.

To submit an application for a building permit for a new structure, please provide:

  1. One completed building permit application form.
    1. The contractor listed on the application must submit proof of Worker's Compensation Insurance.
    2. The electrician and plumber listed on the permit must be licensed by the Village of Lawrence.
  2. Two complete sets of structural plans including elevations.
  3. Two property surveys and two plot plans.
  4. Plans must indicate the property's Zoning District and all proposed and permitted uses, setback distances, heights, building coverage and surface coverage.
  5. Six additional sets of elevations.
  6. Pictures of the existing property.
  7. Sample of the exterior materials that will be used.

To submit an application for a building permit for additions and exterior alterations, please provide:

  1. One completed building permit application form.
    1. The contractor listed on the application must submit proof of Worker's Compensation Insurance.
    2. The electrician and plumber listed on the permit must be licensed by the Village of Lawrence.
  2. Two complete sets of structural plans with elevations.
  3. Two property surveys and two plot plans.
  4. Plans must indicate the property's Zoning District and all proposed and permitted uses, setback distances, heights, building coverage and surface coverage.
  5. Six additional sets of elevations only, showing the proposed additions.
  6. Pictures of the existing structure.
  7. Sample of the exterior materials, which will be used.
To submit an application for an interior alteration, please provide :

  1. One completed building permit form.
    1. The contractor listed on the application must submit proof of Worker's Compensation Insurance.
    2. The electrician and plumber listed on the permit must be licensed by the Village of Lawrence.
  2. Two complete sets of structural plans.
To submit an application for a plumbing permit, please provide :

  1. One completed building permit application form.
    1. The plumber listed on the application must be licensed by the Village of Lawrence.
  2. Two riser diagrams.
To submit an application for a fence, please provide:

  1.   A completed building permit application.
  2.   Two property surveys on which you have indicated the location of the proposed fence.
  3.   A drawing or picture of the type of fence that will be installed.
  4.   Photos of the area on the property where the fence will be installed.
  5.   The finished side of all fences must face adjoining properties.
  6.   All posts and supports must be located on the interior side of the fence.
  • A permit must also be applied for when replacing more than 50% of the length of an existing fence.

To submit an application for a curb cut for a driveway, please provide :

  1. A completed building permit application.
  2. The contractor listed on the permit must submit proof of Worker's Compensation Insurance.
  3. Two copies of your property survey on which is indicated the proposed size and location of the curb cut and any utility poles or fire hydrants.
  4. The survey must also indicate the dimensions of all new paved areas and the proposed and permitted surface coverage.
  5. Photos of the location of the proposed curb cut.
To submit an application for a building permit for a swimming pool, above or in ground, please provide:

  1. One completed building permit application form.
    1. The contractor listed on the permit must submit proof of Worker's Compensation Insurance.
    2. The electrician and plumber listed on the permit must be licensed by the Village of Lawrence.
  2. Two complete sets of structural plans.
  3. Two property surveys and two plot plans.
  4. Photos of the proposed location of the swimming pool, pool equipment and the pool enclosure.
  5. A drawing or picture of the type of enclosure that will be installed.
To submit an application for a tennis court you must submit:

  1. One completed building permit application form.
    1. The contractor listed must submit proof of Worker's Compensation Insurance.
  2. Two complete sets of structural plans.
  3. Two property surveys and two plot plans.
  4. Photos of the proposed location of the tennis court.
To submit an application for the installation of central air conditioning or the replacement of an existing central air conditioning unit you must submit:

  1. One completed building permit application.
    1. The contractor listed on the permit must submit proof of Worker's Compensation Insurance.
  2. Two copies of the property survey on which is indicated the proposed location for the central air conditioning condenser unit or units.
  3. Photos of the proposed area where the air conditioning condenser unit or units will be located.
To submit an application for the installation, conversion or replacement of any oil or gas fired burner or hot water heater you must submit:

  1. One completed building permit application form.
    1. The plumber listed on the application form must be licensed by the Village of Lawrence.
  2. If an existing oil storage tank is to be abandoned, the plumber or contractor must contact Nassau County at (516) 571-3410.
  3. A permit must be filed with the Village of Lawrence, along with written approval from Nassau County, to abandon or remove any oil storage tank. 
  4. Contact the Building Department office for more information regarding oil storage tanks.
